# Returns and exchanges on Shopify in 2026: what the platform does natively and where apps fill gaps

*Shopify's native returns now cover more than most comparison articles admit: return rules, self-serve return requests, refunds to store credit and a report of returns by reason. The real gaps are narrower: customers cannot request an exchange themselves, and return labels inside Shopify exist only for US domestic orders.*

## Key points

- Shopify natively supports return rules, self-serve return requests, refunds to store credit and a report of returned products by reason.
- Customers cannot request an exchange through Shopify's self-serve returns; staff can still add exchange items to a return in the admin.
- Shopify creates return labels only for US domestic orders; stores shipping from elsewhere need a carrier, a shipping app or a returns app.
- From 1 December 2026, Built for Shopify returns apps with buyer-facing self-service must authenticate customers through the Customer Account API.
- Most returns apps charge a monthly allowance plus a fee per extra return, so their cost grows with the return rate.

## The short answer

In October 2026, Shopify natively lets a merchant set return rules (window, restocking fee, return shipping fee, final-sale items), lets customers submit return requests from their customer account, lets staff refund to store credit, and reports returned products by reason. Shopify does not let customers request an exchange through self-serve returns, and Shopify only creates return labels for US domestic orders.

A returns app on Shopify is therefore no longer needed just to have a return process. A returns app earns its place when a store wants customer-initiated exchanges, automatic approval, return labels outside the US, or incentives that steer a refund towards an exchange or credit.

In this article, *native* means features in the Shopify admin and customer accounts with no app installed. *Self-serve returns* means the customer starts the request from their account instead of writing to support.

## What Shopify does natively

**Return rules.** Shopify's return rules offer a return window preset of 14, 30 or 90 days, unlimited, or a custom number of days. The window starts on the delivery date, or on the fulfilment date plus a transit buffer when no delivery date is known. A merchant can add an optional restocking fee as a percentage of the return, and choose between free return shipping, a flat return fee charged once per return, or customers buying their own label. Final-sale exceptions can be set by product or by collection, but bundles cannot be marked final sale.

**Rules apply to manual returns too.** Shopify states that return rules apply to all orders, including B2B orders, and that rules such as restocking fees apply even when staff process a return manually in the admin without self-serve returns switched on.

**Self-serve return requests.** With self-serve returns switched on, customers submit a return or cancellation request from their account and can give a reason and the condition of the item. The merchant reviews every request in the admin, approves or declines it, and on approval can attach shipping instructions, a return label and exchange items.

**Store credit.** Since 18 July 2025, staff can refund a return to store credit, to the original payment method, or to a mix of both, and can optionally set an expiry date on the credit. The staff member needs to be the store owner or hold the refund-to-store-credit permission.

**Reasons in reports.** Shopify has offered a fixed list of return reasons for staff since 31 October 2023. Shopify's refund documentation names a report, *Top returned products with reasons*, that groups returned items by reason, and notes that it uses only reasons recorded on returns, not notes typed into a plain refund.

## Where the native flow stops

**No customer-requested exchanges.** Shopify's self-serve returns page says exchanges cannot be requested in self-serve returns, and exchange-specific return rules are not available. When a customer asks for an exchange inside a return request, the documented workaround is to decline the request and create a new return with exchange items in the admin. The exchange itself is native; letting the customer choose the replacement is not.

**Labels outside the US.** Shopify's return-label documentation says return labels are available only for US domestic orders, with USPS, UPS and FedEx, billed when the carrier scans the parcel. A store shipping from anywhere else, or returning from a US territory, military address or another country, has to buy the label from a carrier, a shipping app or a returns app.

**Manual approval.** The merchant decides every request. Shopify documents no rule that approves low-risk returns automatically, so volume means staff time.

**Legacy customer accounts.** Self-serve returns do not work with legacy customer accounts. A store that wants to keep the older accounts can add a link to the newer customer accounts so customers can still reach the request form.

## What returns apps add

We read the public Shopify App Store listings of four leading returns apps on 11 October 2026. All four advertise a branded return portal, exchanges started by the customer, store credit inside the return flow, rule-based automation and return labels beyond the US. Beyond that, the four apps differ mainly in how they charge.

**AfterShip Returns & Exchanges** shows a rating of 4.7 from 1,542 reviews and the Built for Shopify badge. The AfterShip listing has a free plan and paid plans with a monthly return allowance and a fee per extra return; it advertises exchange offers, fraud checks, return rules and analytics.

**Return Prime** shows 4.8 from 773 reviews. Return Prime's free plan includes 5 return requests, every plan charges per extra request, and the free plan lists an EU-compliant withdrawal button.

**Loop Returns & Exchanges** shows 4.6 from 446 reviews. Loop's free plan includes US and Canada domestic return labels; instant exchanges, Shop Now, bonus credit and fraud prevention sit on its highest listed plan.

**ReturnGO** shows 4.9 from 406 reviews, has no free plan and a 14-day trial, and each plan includes a set number of returns with a fee per extra return. ReturnGO lists auto-exchange, auto-refund and auto-approval rules and photo or video uploads.

The common pricing model is a monthly allowance of returns plus a charge per return over it. For a merchant, that means the app's cost scales with the return rate, which is worth modelling before choosing a plan.

## Two rules that change the comparison in 2026

**The EU withdrawal function.** Directive (EU) 2023/2673 adds Article 11a to the Consumer Rights Directive 2011/83/EU. Traders selling at distance to consumers through an online interface must offer a withdrawal function labelled with the words 'withdraw from contract here' or an equally unambiguous phrase, continuously available through the withdrawal period. Member States apply the national measures from 19 June 2026. A Shopify return request form is not automatically that function; a store selling to EU consumers should check its national transposition and whether its returns app claims to cover it.

**Customer Account API for Built for Shopify returns apps.** A Shopify developer changelog post of 17 June 2026 says that, effective 1 December 2026, returns and exchanges apps offering buyer-facing self-service must authenticate customers through the Customer Account API, or risk losing Built for Shopify status. Merchants choosing an app now can ask the vendor whether its portal already meets that rule.

## Where the reports were wrong

**'Shopify does not generate return labels.'** Wrong for US domestic orders, where Shopify sells USPS, UPS and FedEx return labels. Correct for every other origin.

**'Exchanges and store credit flows are absent.'** Half wrong. Refunds to store credit have been native since 18 July 2025, and staff can add exchange items to a return in the admin. Only customer-requested exchanges are missing.

**'There is no consolidated reporting; return reasons live inside orders.'** Wrong. Shopify documents a report of top returned products with reasons. We could not confirm on which plans that report appears.

**Stale listing figures.** The report gave AfterShip 1,267 reviews and Loop 4.7 from 409 reviews; on 11 October 2026 the listings showed 1,542 for AfterShip and 4.6 from 446 for Loop. Review counts move every week, so any figure in a comparison article is a snapshot.

**Missing rules.** The report did not mention the December 2026 Customer Account API requirement or the June 2026 EU withdrawal function, the two changes most likely to affect which app a merchant picks this year.

## Method

We started from an AI deep-research report on the Shopify returns app landscape. We kept only claims we could check at a primary source on 11 October 2026: the Shopify Help Center, the Shopify changelog and developer changelog, the official text of the EU directive, and the apps' own App Store listings. App figures are quoted from those listings as public facts about third parties.

We could not verify, and therefore dropped, the report's claims about other apps (Redo, ParcelWILL, Rich Returns, ReturnZap, ZigZag, Yanet, Narvar), its claims about enterprise certifications and carrier counts, and its claim that no app serves cash-on-delivery stores in Eastern Europe.

## Limitations

Shopify changes its help pages without version numbers; everything here describes the pages as they read on 11 October 2026. We did not test the features in a live store, and we did not check plan availability for each native feature. App ratings, review counts and plan contents change often. We read four listings, not the whole returns category, and a listing is the vendor's own description, not proof that a feature works. Nothing here is legal advice on the EU withdrawal function.

## Questions and answers

### Can customers request an exchange on Shopify without an app?

No. Shopify's documentation says exchanges cannot be requested through self-serve returns. A customer can request a return and give a reason; the merchant can then add exchange items when handling the return in the admin, or decline the request and create a new return with exchange items. Letting the customer pick the replacement item themselves requires a returns app.

### Does Shopify generate return shipping labels?

Only for US domestic orders. Shopify's return-label page lists USPS, UPS and FedEx, with pay-on-scan billing, so the merchant is charged only when the carrier scans the parcel. For a fulfilment location outside the United States, or returns from US territories, military addresses or abroad, the merchant must buy labels from a carrier, a shipping app or a returns app.

### Can Shopify refund a return to store credit natively?

Yes. Since 18 July 2025, staff can refund a return to store credit, to the original payment method, or split between both, and can optionally set an expiry date on the credit. The staff member must be the store owner or hold the permission to refund to store credit.

### Do Shopify self-serve returns work with legacy customer accounts?

No. Self-serve returns and cancellations do not work with legacy customer accounts. A store can upgrade to the newer customer accounts, or keep legacy accounts for the storefront and checkout while adding a link to the newer accounts so customers can still submit return requests.

### What is the EU withdrawal button and when does it apply?

Directive (EU) 2023/2673 adds Article 11a to the Consumer Rights Directive. Traders selling to consumers at distance through an online interface must provide a withdrawal function labelled 'withdraw from contract here' or equally clear wording, available throughout the withdrawal period. Member States apply it from 19 June 2026, and national laws may add details.
