# How do you sell configurable, high-priced products on Shopify by request for quote: native draft orders, hidden prices and RFQ apps

*Shopify has no storefront request-for-quote feature, but every plan with B2B can make a company's checkout end in a draft order that staff review, reprice and send back as an invoice with a checkout link. Hiding prices is the weak point: a theme can hide them, but Shopify's public product endpoints and the Storefront API still return them, and Google's product feed requires a price that matches the page. RFQ apps add the form, the hidden price and the quote-to-order step; their low-star reviews are mostly about prices still showing and priced options lost from the quote.*

## Key points

- Shopify has no storefront request-for-quote button, but checkout to draft lets chosen B2B company locations submit an order for approval on every plan that has B2B, and staff can then reprice it and send an invoice with a checkout link.
- Hiding a price in the theme does not hide it from Shopify's public product endpoints or the tokenless Storefront API, which returned prices without login in our test.
- Google Merchant Center requires a price for each product and asks that it match the landing page, so hidden-price products either stay out of the feed or show a real starting price.
- Since 15 October 2025 a product can have 2,048 variants, which lets many configurable products carry real prices per combination; changing a cart line's price with a cart transform function is limited to Shopify Plus.
- The low-star reviews of the leading RFQ app are mostly 2020 to 2024 complaints about prices still showing and priced options lost from the quote after theme changes.
- Draft orders created since 1 April 2025 are deleted after one year of inactivity, so long-running quotes need to be touched or stored elsewhere.

## The short answer

Shopify does not ship a public "request a quote" button. What it ships is the machinery behind one: draft orders, which staff can reprice and send as an invoice with a checkout link, and, on every plan that has B2B since April 2026, a *checkout to draft* setting that shows customers of chosen company locations a *Submit for approval* button in checkout. That covers known business customers. It does not cover an anonymous visitor asking for a price on a configured product.

For that, merchants install an RFQ app. The hard part is not the form. It is keeping the price hidden everywhere it can appear and keeping every paid option in the quote. This article is for merchants selling made-to-order, configurable or high-priced goods on Shopify and for people building tools for them. It does not repeat our earlier article on native B2B versus wholesale apps; it covers only quoting and configurable products. We checked each platform fact in Shopify's documentation and each app fact on the App Store listing on 19 October 2026.

## What Shopify offers natively: checkout to draft and draft orders

Shopify's B2B plan comparison lists **draft order to invoice** and **checkout to draft** as available on Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus. According to the B2B draft orders page, when a merchant wants to review orders before accepting them, customers of the chosen company location see a *Submit for approval* button in checkout. The submitted order lands on the Drafts page with prices locked by default, and it is not an order until staff click *Create order* or the customer pays the invoice they are sent.

The same page describes two quoting tools. Staff can set a custom price on a line item when they need to quote a negotiated price that differs from the company's catalog, and price locks keep a quoted price in place when the product's price changes later. To send only some orders for review, for example above a certain value, Shopify points to a payment customization function rather than a setting.

Draft orders themselves are on every plan. Shopify's help centre lists selling at custom prices, including surcharges and negotiated rates, and sending invoices with secure checkout links. In the Admin API, a draft order has an `invoiceUrl`, the checkout link sent in the invoice email, and a `reserveInventoryUntil` time after which held stock is released. Deposit requirements on draft orders are Shopify Plus only.

One rule matters for slow quotes. Shopify states that draft orders created on or after 1 April 2025 are deleted automatically after **1 year** of inactivity, and any edit resets the timer. A quote that sits untouched for a year disappears.

## Hiding the price: where it leaks

We found no native Shopify setting that hides prices from logged-out visitors on a store that sells to the public. The closest is the B2B store access setting: a dedicated B2B store can be restricted so that only logged-in B2B customers can view it. Shopify's own page says this does not redirect every visitor to a sign-in page, may send retail customers to authentication on some pages of a blended store, and stops prospective customers from requesting an account. It is a wall around the whole store, not a hidden price on some products.

So most price hiding is done in the theme, and the theme is only one of the places Shopify publishes a price. Shopify's Ajax API documents a `/products/{handle}.js` endpoint that returns the product with `price`, `price_min`, `price_max` and each variant's price. The Storefront API, built for buyer-facing apps, offers tokenless access to products, collections, search and cart, and its public token is described as visible to buyers.

In our test on 19 October 2026 on a large public Shopify store, without logging in and without a token, `/products.json`, the product's `.js` endpoint and a tokenless Storefront API query each returned the price. That store does not hide prices, so the test shows the endpoints are open, not that a particular RFQ app fails. It does mean that hiding a price with CSS or theme code leaves it readable to anyone who requests these URLs. We did not test whether any app blocks these endpoints; a merchant who needs the price truly secret should set the product price to something that is safe to reveal, not rely on the theme.

## Google Shopping and a hidden price

Google Merchant Center's product data specification marks `price` as required for each product and asks that the submitted amount and currency match the price on the landing page and at checkout, shown prominently. A product whose price is hidden on its page therefore cannot meet the specification as written.

Our reading, not a Google statement about quote products: a merchant has two consistent options. Exclude hidden-price products from the feed, or show a real starting price on the page and submit that one. Submitting a price that the page hides is the mismatch the specification describes.

## Configurable products: variants, options and paid add-ons

Since **15 October 2025**, Shopify allows up to **2,048** variants per product, up from 100. Shopify's developer changelog warns that apps not using its current GraphQL product APIs may give a downgraded or broken experience on products with more than 100 variants. For many configurable products, 2,048 is enough to make each priced combination a real variant, which gives it a real price that a quote and a draft order can carry.

Where combinations are too many, merchants use a product options app. **Globo Product Options, Variant**, the largest we opened, showed a rating of **4.9** from **5,173** reviews and the Built for Shopify badge. Its listing puts price add-ons on the Premium plan at $9.90 a month and says add-on pricing runs on Shopify Functions so discount codes and taxes stay accurate.

Shopify's own tool for changing the price of a cart line is the cart transform function. Its `lineUpdate` operation can override a line's price, title and image, but Shopify's documentation says only Shopify Plus stores (and development stores) can use apps with that operation. Combined listings, which join several products into one listing, also require Plus. Below Plus, a priced option is usually a variant, an extra add-on line, or something an app calculates. Each of those is a different object an RFQ app has to read correctly, which is where the reviews below come in.

## What the RFQ apps offer

**SA Request a Quote, Hide Price**, by Samita, showed **4.9** from **652** reviews and the Built for Shopify badge. It has a free Basic plan that takes quote requests, Premium at $16.99 a month with hide-price rules by tag, vendor or collection, and Pro at $36.99 a month with convert-to-order and quote export; a Shopify Plus price of $69 a month is listed separately. The listing names Globo Product Options under works with.

**Quotify: Request a Quote (RFQ)**, by AppHive, launched on 9 March 2021, showed **4.9** from **105** reviews and the Built for Shopify badge. Premium at $17 a month includes hiding the add-to-cart button and price and an automatic draft order; Pro is $34 a month, and a one-time Pro Lifetime option costs $700. The listing says proposals convert to orders automatically when accepted.

Both follow the same pattern: a form instead of, or next to, the buy button; an admin where staff edit the quote; and a step that turns an accepted quote into a Shopify order or draft order. The native checkout to draft flow does the last two for logged-in B2B buyers. The apps' remaining value is the anonymous request, the hidden price and the quote document.

## What the low-star reviews complain about

Low-star reviews are a small share. SA Request a Quote's breakdown showed **11** one-star and **4** two-star reviews out of 652; Quotify's showed one of each out of 105. They are still the most specific public record of where quoting on Shopify breaks.

**Prices still visible.** A one-star review of SA Request a Quote from June 2022 says the price still displayed on page load because it was only being hidden with CSS. Another, from May 2023, after about two years of use, says hiding prices did not work on all Online Store 2.0 themes.

**Priced options lost.** A two-star review, last edited in May 2023, says that after upgrading to a 2.0 theme, product options that add a cost were no longer carried into the quote. Another, edited in August 2024, says the integration with a product options app and the correct display of prices stopped working, and that the app had been sold to another developer without notice.

**Converting and totals.** A July 2022 review says quotes could suddenly no longer be converted to orders, and a November 2020 review asks for a total price on the quote. The more recent low-star reviews, from 2025 and 2026, are mostly about support response times. Quotify's two low-star reviews, from February 2024 and August 2025, call the app confusing and the price editor slow; the developer replied that it had released a new editor.

Most of the price-leak and option complaints are from 2020 to 2024. They show what fails when a theme or another app changes underneath an RFQ app. They do not show that the current versions still fail, and we did not test them.

## Where the reports were wrong

**1. Review counts and ratings.** The report gave SA Request a Quote **612** reviews and a **4.8** rating. On 19 October 2026 the listing showed **652** and **4.9**.

**2. The second app's name.** The report called the second app "Q:Request a Quote & Hide Price, formerly Quotify" with **102** reviews. The listing at the same address is named *Quotify: Request a Quote (RFQ)* and showed **105**.

**3. Old complaints as a current gap.** The report built its case on four low-star reviews, the oldest from 2020 and the most recent price-leak complaint from 2023, and presented them as the incumbent's present weakness. The dates are on the listing. Old reviews show what can break, not what is broken now.

**4. Native quoting.** Several secondary guides we found say Shopify has no native quoting on any plan, and one forum answer says quoting is Plus only. Neither matches Shopify's documentation: there is no storefront RFQ form, but checkout to draft with Submit for approval, custom line prices and price locks are on every plan that has B2B.

## Method

We started from an AI deep-research report that compared several software niches and recommended building a Shopify RFQ app. We removed the recommendation, the revenue model and the build estimates, which were projections, and kept the facts about Shopify and the apps. We checked each one on 19 October 2026 at Shopify's help centre (B2B plan features, B2B draft orders, B2B store access, draft orders, variants), Shopify's developer documentation (Ajax product API, Storefront API, cart transform function, DraftOrder object), the Shopify developer changelog, Google Merchant Center's product data specification, and the App Store listings and review filters of the apps named.

We also requested the public product endpoints and a tokenless Storefront API query on one large public Shopify store to see whether they return prices without login. We could not confirm at a Shopify-owned source the commonly repeated limit of three options per product, so it is not used above. We did not install any RFQ app.

## Limitations

App listings describe what the vendor says the app does, and review filters show what some merchants said at a given date, not how the current version behaves. We read two RFQ apps and one options app, not the whole category. The endpoint test was on a store that does not hide prices; we did not test whether a specific app blocks those endpoints. The Google Shopping point is our reading of the specification, not a Google ruling on quote-only products. Shopify updates help pages without version numbers and changes plan availability; check again before building on it.

## Questions and answers

### Does Shopify have a native request-for-quote feature?

Not a storefront form for any visitor. Shopify's B2B tools include checkout to draft, which shows chosen company locations a Submit for approval button in checkout and turns the order into a draft for staff to review, reprice and invoice. It is listed on Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus. Quotes for anonymous visitors need an app.

### Can I hide prices on Shopify without an app?

Only by restricting a dedicated B2B store to logged-in B2B customers, which walls off the whole store. Hiding prices on some products for the public is done in the theme or with an app. A theme only hides what it renders: Shopify's public product endpoints and the Storefront API still return the price.

### How does a quote become an order on Shopify?

Through a draft order. Staff set custom line prices or discounts, optionally lock the prices, and send an invoice whose link opens a checkout. The draft becomes an order when the customer pays or when staff click Create order. RFQ apps automate this step from their own quote screen.

### Can hidden-price products run in Google Shopping?

Not as written in Google's specification. Merchant Center requires a price for every product and asks that it match the price on the landing page and at checkout. A merchant can exclude those products from the feed or show a real starting price and submit that. This is our reading of the specification.

### How many variants can a Shopify product have in 2026?

Up to 2,048, since 15 October 2025; the previous limit was 100. Shopify warns that apps not using its current GraphQL product APIs may break on products with more than 100 variants, so check the theme and apps, including any RFQ app, before relying on large variant counts.

### Do Shopify draft orders expire?

Draft orders created on or after 1 April 2025 are deleted automatically after one year of inactivity, and any edit resets the timer. Separately, a draft order can reserve stock until a set time, after which the inventory is released.
